Freshman Emerson Mulvey scored five goals and sophomore Riley Johnson netted three to help Mater Dei’s girls water polo team defeat visiting Laguna Beach 12-6 in the first round of the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs Thursday.

Michigan-bound goalie Sophia Bunnell added 12 saves for the Monarchs (23-4), who advanced to the Open Division semifinals for the first time. The Trinity League runner-up will face Foothill on Wednesday.

Kara Carver had one goal and two assists to lead Laguna Beach, which trailed 8-3 at halftime.

No. 2 seeded Foothill (23-4) defeated visiting Oaks Christian 14-7 in another first round match Thursday.

In another Open Division game:

Orange Lutheran 14, Long Beach Wilson 9: Allison Cohen scored six goals and Kyla Pranajaya made 12 saves to lead the top-seeded and defending champion Lancers (26-0) at Orange Coast College.

In the semifinals, Orange Lutheran will face Newport Harbor (18-8), which edged No. 4 San Marcos 10-9 in Goleta in another first round match.
