Westminster football coach Steven Anderson has resigned after a four-year run that restored the Lions’ winning ways.
Anderson confirmed Wednesday that he has resigned to focus on his duties as a math and data science teacher at Westminster, his alma mater.
“(I) want to focus on becoming an even better educator,” he said.
A former standout quarterback at the school, Anderson took the reins before the pandemic-shortened spring season in 2021.
The Lions were a combined 2-18 in 2018-19 but Anderson guided the school to 28-13 record in four seasons, including three consecutive playoff appearances. The team averaged nine wins the past three seasons.
This past fall, Westminster finished 9-4 and reached the CIF-SS Division 11 semifinals before falling to Riverside Poly.
In 2022, the Lions went 10-2 and advanced to the second round of the Division 11 playoffs.
“I feel great about it,” Anderson said of his tenure. “Battling through COVID, and ending it in the semifinals, is a step in the right direction.”
Anderson’s progress will show in Westminster’s league placement in 2024 and 2025. In the county’s new competitive equity league model for football, the Lions will play in the middle-of-the-pack Kappa League that includes St. Margaret’s, Segerstrom, Brea Olinda, Esperanza and Garden Grove. “We definitely earned the right to be there,” he said.
