A strong and brilliant light has gone out. January 30, 2024 The world is a bit dimmer today as we mourn the loss of our beloved mother Mary Jo Carter.Mary Jo Carter a strong and brilliant educator passed away peacefully January 30, 2024. She became an elementary school teacher and taught thousands of children in the Norwalk-La Mirada school district. Time after time her students would hug her and say “I love you Mrs. Carter!”. She also worked as a substitute teacher in the Garden Grove school district. Mary Jo was born in Arkansas to extreme poverty, just before the start of WWII. Her mother died when Mary Jo was only 4 years old leaving her and her, 2-year old sister.Mary Jo grew into a voracious reader and It quickly became apparent that she had a high level of intelligence. She excelled in school and was valedictorian of her high school class. She was awarded a scholarship to attend College.Mary Jo arrived in California in April 1960, joining her husband, who had gone ahead and found work at North American Aviation and a place to live. She travelled by train, with her baby Laura in her arms and her baby Libby not yet born. Mary Jo completed her education and graduated from Long Beach State University with a degree in Child Development and Early Education. She was an extraordinary woman.
