Nichols continued, “These programs are advantageous for the process of healing from trauma, breaking bad habits, and developing good character for men coming out of addiction and homelessness.”

Additionally, our two licensed adult day centers located in Garden Grove and Laguna Woods provide direct care that makes it easier for people to age at home and helps promote the health and wellness of each participant and their families,” said Aaron Gutierrez from Alzheimer’s Orange County. “Whether it’s a simple phone call from someone seeking answers on how to get their loved one to bathe, an educational class that helped a care partner learn new skills to better understand how to manage their spouse’s behavior changes, or helping an adult daughter with children enroll their mom with dementia in one of our Healthy Aging Centers so she can get a break, or any of other examples of how we deliver support, each one of them is (considered) a success,” said Gutierrez.

Settled over 400 miles away from Los Angeles, this world renowned wine region is located in Napa County, 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. For a swifter journey, a flight of less than 2 hours can do the trick, but then you would miss all the beauty and fun on the open road. Although the drive is a little over 6-hours, I can promise you it’s truly worth it.

While we could choose the familiar coastal route along the 101, like we did for our Solvang trip, this time, we’re opting for the inland path via the 5. This alternate route not only offers a change of scenery but also promises a fresh perspective on California’s beauty. So why rush when you can savor the journey alongside me, The Monthly Traveler?

Going up North!

Venturing into Northern California is an enchanting shift from the dynamic landscape of Southern California. When we think of Nor-Cal, cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento come to mind, bringing with them a distinctive change in energy and surroundings. Upon our return to the hotel, we find our fifth stop, ALBA, the inviting on-site restaurant at the River Terrace Inn. Once you’re recharged, our second destination is the enchanting Neal Family Vineyards. This remarkable vineyard boasts over 50 years of organic farming prestige and recently achieved the coveted title of the first Regenerative Organic Certified vineyard in Napa Valley. It’s a distinction held by only a select few worldwide.

LIVE OAK CANYON PUMPKIN FARM

Topping the list is the largest pumpkin patch in Southern California, Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin in Redlands. Kick off the fall festivities early on their opening weekend from Sept. 22-24 which has the best deals of the season. This family-friendly working farm has over 50 rides and games including a twisting and turning corn maze, a pumpkin blaster and some new rides for the 2023 season. Be sure to stop here and hit the food court and grab a beverage at the beer garden if you need a rest while enjoying the festivities. If you come to visit between September 22nd and the 30th, you’ll get to see 400+ animals at the  petting zoo which is free with admission. Live Oak has other special offers such as Kids BOGO on September 25, October 2 and October 9. First Responder Appreciation Day, which offers free admission for police, military, fire and EMS, is on Tuesday, October 3. Live Oak is a must-visit so get your tickets today!

UNDERWOOD FAMILY FARMS FALL HARVEST FESTIVAL

An hour or so northwest of DTLA in Moorpark lies Underwood Family Farms. This 50-acre farm is open from September 30 to October 31 for those looking to pick their own pumpkin and embrace the rural lifestyle.  If you’re in the mood for something unique, be sure to check the schedule and go see one of their pig races, Farmer Craig’s Chicken Show, or the hay climbing pyramids. Themed weekends are big at Underwood Family Farms. Dress up and enjoy weekends such as Wild West, Antique Tractor and Farm Country weekends.

IRVINE REGIONAL PARK PUMPKIN PATCH

Travel down into the OC to find the Irvine Regional Park Pumpkin Patch. The patch itself is free but vehicles will have to pay upon entry into the park. On September 23, there is the great pumpkin weigh-off where $6,700 in cash and other prizes will be awarded to those with the biggest gourds. There’s an adorable train to ride for the little ones as well as mini John Deere vehicles kids can take for a spin. The atmosphere is family friendly and you’ll be sure to have a great time.

MR. BONES PUMPKIN PATCH

For those living near West LA, take a quick trip to Culver City to visit Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch. The name isn’t the only cool thing about this urban pumpkin patch. There are ample photo opportunities at the patch, especially in front of the eye catching shack made out of gourds. Be sure to buy tickets early as tickets to Mr. Bones are known to sell out.

Each of these wonderful pumpkin patches has their own unique features so be sure to check their event schedules to see what they have to offer. Grab the family, take some pictures, pick a pumpkin (or 5), and get ready for Halloween!

Our last escapade led us to the enchanting city of Solvang, where we strolled through streets that felt like they’d been plucked straight from the pages of a fairytale. As we make our way through the town, prepare to be amazed by its enchanting architecture and Danish charm. This quaint town was established by three visionary Danish educators – Reverend Benedict Nordentoft, Reverend J. M. Gregersen, and Professor P. P. Hornsyld. Seeking refuge from the harsh Midwestern winters, they ventured westward, where they purchased 9,000 acres of land in January 1911, giving birth to the truly unique town of Solvang.

Let us step into the captivating realm of the “Danish Capital of America,” where the ambiance changes as you explore the quaint streets and charming alleys, adorned with small shops. Take in the timbered facades and whimsical windmills that transport you to a fairytale setting. Soak up the authentic Danish experience as we explore this delightful town together. This is by far one of my favorite places to spend a few hours just walking and exploring.

After a wonderful morning stroll around town, those bellies should be rumbling, so let’s head on over to Paula’s Pancake House for breakfast. This family-owned restaurant has been serving up delicious breakfast and lunch since 1986. They’re known for their Danish pancakes, which are thin, crispy, and absolutely delicious!

If you’re looking to spend the night in Solvang, which I highly suggest, the Hamlet Inn is my recommendation. After a day of exploring, It’s the perfect place to unwind.

For all you cheese lovers out there, the Cailloux Cheese Shop is a must-visit. This gourmet cheese shop offers a wide selection of cheeses from all over the world, as well as wine tastings. It’s the perfect place for a quick break and a charcuterie board. I can personally say that this is one of my favorite destinations in Solvang!

Pour Decisions

Speaking of wine tastings, our next stop is Cali Love Wine. This cute little tasting room offers a wide selection of wines and an extremely knowledgeable staff. For those of you itching for some Karaoke with your wine in Solvang, this is the place for you!

Hoppy Times

If beer is more your thing, let’s head on over to the Solvang Brewing Company. This brewery offers a wide selection of craft beers, as well as delicious food options if you’re in the mood for a snack. They also have a great outdoor seating area, so you can enjoy your beer while taking in the sights and sounds of Solvang. Don’t get too carried away, we have more walking to do.

As we continue our exploration of Solvang, we can’t miss the opportunity to visit the Elverhøj Museum. This cultural gem is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich Danish heritage and history of the Santa Ynez Valley. The museum’s name, “Elverhøj,” translates to “Elves Hill” in Danish.

Inside, we’ll find a collection of exhibits that delve into the history and traditions of the Danish immigrants who settled in the area. From art displays to artifacts, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives and stories of the Danish pioneers and their contributions to the community.

This American smokehouse and tavern is a culinary gem that offers a delightful blend of barbeque classics and an eclectic mix of modern wine-country cuisine. The warm and inviting ambiance of Whiskey N Rye makes it the perfect spot to enjoy a hearty meal full of flavor while in Solvang.
