High stakes in Las Vegas

The Kansas City Chiefs are in their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons and face the San Francisco 49ers. It will be a rematch of Super Bowl LIV in 2020, when the Chiefs won, 31-20.

Game snapshot

The 49ers are a slim two-point favorite against the AFC’s Chiefs. Both teams bring high-powered passing games, but San Francisco, led by All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, was tied for first in rushing touchdowns (27) in the league. Both quarterbacks are mobile and can evade the pass rush, but the Chiefs had the second-most sacks this season with 57; the 49ers had 48.

The quarterbacks

Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes, 28, is in his seventh NFL season and had 4,183 passing yards with a 67.2 completion percentage. His quarterback rating was 92.6, and he threw for 27 touchdowns and had 14 interceptions. Mahomes rushed for 389 yards and was sacked 27 times in 16 games.

49ers: Brock Purdy, 24, had 4,280 regular-season passing yards and a 69.4 completion percentage. His quarterback rating was 113, the highest in the league for a quarterback that played 16 games. He threw for 31 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He rushed for two touchdowns and 144 yards. Purdy was injured in last season’s NFC Championship and required elbow surgery in the offseason.
