Mosaic to be unveiled at Hilbert Museum
A massive, 1970 glass-tile mosaic by artist Millard Sheets will be unveiled Tuesday, Jan. 30 at its new home on the façade of the Hilbert Museum of California Art in Orange.
The 40-foot by 16-foot mosaic once greeted customers at the Home Savings & Loan in Santa Monica and has been carefully restored 55 years later.
The piece called “Pleasures Along the Beach” features sunbathers, sailboats and the sun setting over the ocean.
It will be a key design feature at the Hilbert Museum, which is reopening Feb. 23 after an expansion project grew the space to 22,000 square feet.
The event is being held at 3 p.m. at the Hilbert at Chapman University, 167 N. Atchison St.
