A Dana Point house made with repurposed shipping containers is on the market for $1.78 million.

Located in the Lantern District, this 1,600-square-foot container home has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a soundproof automatic sliding barn door crafted from reclaimed lumber from an Idaho barn.

Set with a pedestrian door, the barn door conceals the one-car garage, which doubles as an artist’s studio.

Records show seller Max Auerswald purchased the property in June 2015 for $486,500. At the time, a 500-square-foot, single-story house stood on the lot. He and his wife, Talee, later demolished and replaced it with a house secured by 15-foot-deep caissons.

While the main level is stone and concrete, the couple installed two 40-foot containers and two 20-foot containers to create a second level.

The house, completed in 2019, has a modern industrial look and incorporates found and reclaimed elements, from abandoned doors to repurposed building materials.

Exposed beams, ductwork and pipes complement the reclaimed French limestone floors on the entry level. There, the kitchen features a flip-out window with an Italian travertine slab countertop for passing food and drinks indoors and out.

A steel bifold door extends the dining space out onto the elevated Brazilian hardwood deck. At the front of the house is a small patio concealed by a tall hedge.

The staircase has a metal horizontal railing and leads up to the living room on the second floor. At one end of the living room is the primary suite, which features a walk-through closet and a freestanding tub shower with a hanging oval curtain rod in the ensuite bathroom.

There are also two balconies, one at the front and the other at the back with a corrugated roof.

Smart technology, ample power and a new air-conditioning unit add to the perks of the home listed by Gaetano Lo Grande of Bullock Russell Real Estate Services.

The property at 33832 Robles Drive in Dana Point will open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.

The 8,000-square-foot house has five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a spacious great room with glass walls that opens to the terraced backyard.

Records show Hall bought the property in May 2022 for $6.1 million, 19% more than its asking price, although it initially surfaced for sale at $8.5 million in December. It’s also available for a monthly lease of $29,500.

Built on an over-three-quarter-acre lot in 2018, the house has a dining room with a bar and a fireplace in the living room.

The gourmet kitchen has top-of-the-line appliances, a double oven, an espresso machine and a pantry with a utility sink. A second kitchen is on the lower level, along with a home theater

Pocket doors open from both sides of the primary suite on the upper level, which is accessible by a floating staircase or elevator. The suite features a fireplace, a seating area with a wet bar and a balcony that overlooks the pool, which boasts a see-through glass wall.

There’s a spa, lounge deck, expansive covered patio with a fire pit, a barbecue area, an outdoor powder room and a pool shower.

Features of the primary bathroom include dual water closets, custom lighting and a large walk-in closet with a dedicated vanity area.

A rooftop deck offers valley and mountain views.

Brooke A. Elliott and Joshua Morrow of Christie’s AKG share the listing.

Hall, 38, gained popularity after a brief stint on the ninth season of “American Idol” and amassed a large following on YouTube. In 2015, he starred in the MTV docuseries “Todrick.” He went on to choreograph and occasionally judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

He also played Lola in the Broadway show “Kinky Boots” and later appeared as Billy Flynn in “Chicago” on Broadway and the West End.

A renovated Rancho Mirage home where past and present come together has hit the market for $5.795 million.

The house, originally designed and built by architect Val Powelson in 1959, has been reimagined and restored by the design-build firm Studio Veren, formerly redüHome. Completed in February 2022, it has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and glass walls that connect the interior with resort-style outdoor spaces.

Studio Veren principal Steve Bouwman and Mike Silvaggi, the retired senior vice president of human resources at Louis Vuitton Americas, bought the property through a revocable trust in Silvaggi’s name in February 2021 for $1.425 million, records show.

The house received eight all-cash, above-ask offers within four hours of hitting the market 22 days earlier for $1.025 million, as reported by Palm Springs Life in November 2023.

After a gut renovation, the house is now primed for entertaining.

The main open-plan living space has wood paneling and a circular floating fireplace. Disappearing glass walls seamlessly transition outdoors atop travertine slab flooring.

At the opposite end of the living space, a built-in bar acts as a wall partition that separates the living room from the den.

Green distinguishes the gourmet kitchen, which features an oversized island with seating, a coffee bar and a walk-in pantry. There’s also a dining area.

Off the kitchen is an outdoor barbecue patio with a built-in Lynx grill and a seating area surrounded by citrus trees.

The primary suite has an outdoor shower garden, a walk-in closet with a built-in steamer and sanitizer and heated bathroom floors. An electric bidet adds to the perks.

Outdoor amenities include a pool and spa, a dining area, a water feature and two lounge areas with fire features.

The attached casita, which doubles as a home office, has walls papered in tropical leaves and a separate entrance.

A wired camera system, Control4 Home automation, surround sound, solar and a Tesla backup Powerwall round out the offerings.

Jeff Kohl of The Agency has the listing.

Powelson, who died in 1997 at 73, launched his career as a licensed general building contractor and designer. He became a licensed architect in 1986. He designed homes in the Los Angeles and Palm Springs areas, including the Maranz Residence in Rancho Mirage (1960) and the Indian Wells Country Club House (1959), which Julius Shulman photographed.

A Palm Springs home owned by British actor and filmmaker Emrhys Cooper is on the market for $2.2 million.

The 2,144-square-foot California ranch dubbed “Casa de Rosa” has two bedrooms and three bathrooms. According to the listing, Cliff May is the designer of the 1940s-era house on this quarter-acre lot in The Mesa neighborhood.

Records show Cooper bought the then newly-remodeled and updated home in October 2021 for $1.5 million and even rented it through Airbnb for $357 a night. Cooper shares the house with Irish restaurateur-turned-actor and producer Donal Brophy.

The couple has filled the once all-white interiors with an abundance of rich colors and patterns.

Under the vaulted wood beam ceiling of the living room are dark walls, a fireplace and a built-in bookcase. From there, the house flows into the warmth of the dining room. It holds a tufted cocktail bar with stools.

The den has palm leaf-patterned wallpaper and wood-stained shiplap on the ceiling and walls.

Polished wood floors run throughout the house except in the kitchen. It has black and white checkered floors, stainless steel Viking appliances, a stacked washer and dryer, and a breakfast nook complete with a built-in bookcase.

Checkered floors also adorn the powder room and primary bathroom, which holds a freestanding soaking tub beneath a window and a walk-in shower.

Built-in wardrobes with desks are painted to match the walls in the ensuite bedrooms.

Outside features include a pool with a tanning shelf in the backyard and a fountain in the front yard.

Kennon Earl and Thomas Davila of Compass share the listing.

Cooper, 38, starred in the Emmy-nominated StyleHaul drama series “Vanity” alongside Denise Richards and Karrueche Tran in 2015. In 2021, he made his directorial debut with the 2021 dramedy “The Shuroo Process.” Cooper and Brophy, 44, also wrote, produced and starred in the film that racked up seven wins at various film festivals.

The couple runs the independent entertainment company Idyllwild Picture.

In 2023, the company collaborated with actor and film producer Zachary Quinto on the limited Dekkoo streaming series “Historical Homos,” which Brophy co-hosted.

A Palm Springs midcentury-modern home, originally designed by architect John Kaptur and built into the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, is on the market for $8.75 million.

Cascading rock waterfalls and native terrain surround this 2,932-square-foot house. It has three bedrooms and four bathrooms with boulders integrated into the structure that rises from a massive stone wall.

“Kaptur considered the entire parcel when creating an unmatched environment to enjoy the spectacular setting,” the listing reads.

Large expanses of glass and a graphic roof-line canopy frame the panoramic city and mountain views. A covered patio, pool, spa and koi pond add to the outdoor amenities.

Dubbed “Bougain Villa,” the house dates to 1958 and has only had two owners since then.

The home’s original furniture and artifacts from around the world are available for sale separately, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. That same article mentioned that the original owners hired modernist architect Albert Frey in the 1980s to renovate and expand the home with a mirrored guest house. They then quietly sold it.

Records show it traded hands for $1.09 million in 1999.

Sean Stanfield of Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty and Craig Chorpenning of Desert Sotheby’s International Realty share the listing.

A gated 28-acre Palm Springs retreat, previously owned by late “Three’s Company” star Suzanne Somers and her husband, producer Alan Hamel, is on the market again.

The asking price is $8.95 million.

Completed in 1928, the five-structure residence at the top of a meandering driveway boasts a main house and four unique villas for a combined 7,280 square feet with seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. The villas include a rock house built by modernist architect Albert Frey.

• For related, see: Palm Springs midcentury home built into the mountain seeks $8.8 million

A private funicular carries passengers up the terraced hill, surrounded by rock formations.

Somers and Hamel owned the desert compound at the base of Mount San Jacinto for almost 45 years, as the Southern California News Group reported in February 2021. County records show it traded hands for $8.5 million in May 2021.

After holding it in a trust for two years, the new owner listed it for $12.9 million in April and pulled it off the market in June. The property reappeared in January 2024 at the current price, 31% less than its initial ask.

Multiple Listing Service photos reveal new whitewashed interiors and exteriors with fresh staging. According to listing agent Scott Lyle of Compass, the owner refreshed the entire compound, including the funicular car and track.

The main house is in a European villa style. It has a two-room, eat-in kitchen with a hidden wine cellar, a formal dining room and a poolside living room.

Hillside views abound from the primary suite.

The grounds include a natural rock amphitheater, a lagoon-style pool with multiple lounge decks, a hot tub, hiking trails and a newly rebuilt waterfall and swimming hole.

A new flagstone pool patio matches the flagstone used throughout the residence.

Other improvements to the property include a renovated pool and spa, a Pentair pool equipment system, replacement of 110 outdoor lights, installation of over 300 plants and trees, new air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems, and roof repairs where necessary.

The property is just minutes from restaurants and shops in Downtown Palm Springs.

Somers gained popularity for her role as Chrissy Snow, a loveable yet ditzy character in the ABC roommate sitcom “Three’s Company.” She co-starred with John Ritter and Joyce Dewitt from 1977 to 1984.

Besides her acting career, she is remembered as a singer, best-selling author and businesswoman behind ventures like the ThighMaster exercise device.

Somers died at the age of 76 in October 2023 after a decades-long battle with breast cancer.

This article has been updated to include information on improvements.

A newly built Newport Beach waterfront luxury estate loaded with amenities to rival a 5-star hotel has landed on the market for $68 million.

The listing pitches it as “the epitome of opulence.”

Clad in Lasa slab and architectural rain glass, this 12,749-square-foot house on a large lot in the Balboa Peninsula is a collaboration of Orange-based architect Paul McClean and Laguna Beach-based Gallo Builders. It has six bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a 3,700-square-foot rooftop deck equipped with a retractable C-Seed 144-inch TV screen.

A Kalamazoo barbecue kitchen adds to the elevated al fresco space, with a full audio setup.

Los Angeles-based interior designer Lynda Murray outfitted the home’s two kitchens with top-of-the-line appliances by Miele, SubZero and Liebherr, complemented by Antolini porcelain countertops, Poliform cabinets and Dornbracht plumbing fixtures.

There’s an entertainment lounge and bar, a temperature-controlled 192-bottle wine wall and a separate 750=bottle wine room.

A custom Alison Berger chandelier illuminates the spiral staircase, which boasts stainless steel handrails and stringers polished to a mirror finish and porcelain treads. All three levels are also accessible by elevator.

Movie nights can be had inside the home theater.

Other amenities include a virtual reality racing room, a gym outfitted with Pavi Gym rubber floors and Rogue fitness equipment, and a massage room with towel-warming drawers.

State-of-the-art technology is ever-present, from radiant heated floors in the spa-inspired primary bathroom to whole house systems.

Each bedroom and bathroom offers privacy in addition to luxury, which is a given in this home.

As if that weren’t enough, six-panel fully automated Sky-Frame glass doors open up the living space to the backyard. It includes a large fire pit and a 26-foot Kalamazoo barbecue kitchen and serving island.

There’s a large pool and spa, a four-car garage with a hydraulic door and glass cladding, and along the water’s edge is a pier platform and docks for multiple yachts.

Josh and Heather Altman of Douglas Elliman Real Estate hold the listing.

The new build replaced a 1930s Spanish-style home, which sold in September 2012 for $10.5 million.

Records show Caroline and Elias J. Sabo are the owners. Elias J. Sabo is a founding partner and CEO of Compass Diversified Holdings.

A Newport Beach ultra-luxury mansion taking shape in Crystal Cove behind double gates has hit the market for $89 million.

That makes it the most expensive listing in Orange County.

Tim Smith of Coldwell Banker Realty, one of two agents who represent the Newport Coast trophy estate still under construction, told the Southern California News Group in October 2023 that OC is increasingly producing the kind of high-end luxury builds with the potential for $100 million-plus sales.

“Historically, nobody has built properties to meet that demand, but over the next three to five years, I think you’ll see the best sales in the United States here in Orange County because you’re starting to see people build homes that will fetch those prices,” he said then.

Now, here’s an example of an upward price trend — a mansion marketed as “a masterpiece of engineering and design” with natural light from an atrium to illuminate each level, extending two levels above and below ground.

The nearly 15,000-square-foot, four-story house will have five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a car museum when it’s completed in 2025, according to the listing, as a collaboration by architect Geoff Sumich, builder Ryan Hill of Hill Construction Co., and designer Errol Dejager .

Sited on a three-quarter-acre bluff lot, the property overlooks Pelican Hill Golf Club and offers unobstructed ocean and coastline views. It’s a quick drive to Crystal Cove State Park, Crystal Cove Shopping Center, John Wayne Airport and Fashion Island.

The house fronts a private street in the Crystal Cove Estate Collection neighborhood. From the streetside, a staircase descends to a bridge over a pond from which Sumich, in a video tour, envisions fog emanating at night.

“When you’re walking across the bridge, you’re literally walking across a cloud as you get the entry,” he said.

Arched glass entry doors open into the foyer flanked by offices, and an interior bridge to the living areas and kitchen passes through the multi-level atrium.

“You stand at the bridge, and you look into the volume of that courtyard,” Dejager said in the video. “It takes your breath away.”

The property has been owned through a California limited liability company since February 2018. In October 2023, the unfinished home hit the market at just under $50 million and resurfaced on Jan. 12 at its current ask.

According to the listing, the main floor seamlessly flows into the backyard swimming pool, spa and loggia.

The atrium carries natural light two levels down to a basement-level shallow pond with an acrylic bottom that illuminates the subterranean level below. It has a swimming pool with a spa and waterfall, a wellness center with a sauna and steam room, a gym and the car museum, accessible by lift from the garage one floor up.

Together they hold a minimum of 13 cars.

Other property highlights include a bar lounge, home theater and wine room with storage.

Smith shares the listing with Georgina Jacobson of Coldwell Banker Realty.

On the market for $29.9 million is a newer Manhattan Beach smart home, clad in cedar and glass with scalloped concrete walls that resemble small waves.

The sustainable six-bedroom, 9,479-square-foot house with nine bathrooms has a clean, contemporary design that doesn’t just stand out for its good looks. Situated at the top of the hill on an extra-wide corner lot in a neighborhood with underground utility lines, it also offers unobstructed ocean views from the upstairs bedrooms.

Records show the seller is tech investor Jeffrey Schumacher, the founder and CEO of AI software company NAX (New Asset Exchange) Group. Schumacher and his wife, Jamie, bought the property for almost $19.6 million in November 2021 while completion was still a year away.

That allowed the couple to work with multidisciplinary architecture studio Laney LA and make changes to the design, including “Jamie’s idea to orient the kitchen island toward the pool,” the firm’s owner, architect Anthony Laney, told Southbay magazine.

The minimalist kitchen has a built-in bench incorporated into the island for the breakfast nook. Automated glass walls by Otimma open it and other main floor living spaces to the landscaped pool terrace for seamless indoor-outdoor living.

In the dining room, a large pocket door frames the side yard’s raised plantings against the fence.

Deep overhangs from the upper floor and roof create an additional shaded patio with a fireplace. A stairwell or elevator connects the different levels, from the finished basement to the upper bedrooms with ocean-facing balconies.

The home features an office, a detached gym and different areas for entertaining, including a theater, game room, wine cellar and wet bar.

Smart amenities include 48 rooftop solar panels, Tesla Powerwalls for whole-home backup in case the grid goes down, and a heating and cooling system that divides the home into 14 different zones, each controlled by a thermostat.

Jason Oppenheim of The Oppenheim Group has the listing.
