Among that discussion, people have been using terms like “Pineapple Express,” “Atmospheric River” and even “ARkStorm.”

RELATED: More than 10 inches of rain hits some Southern California areas

An ARkStorm is a type of atmospheric river. Atmospheric rivers are “relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky.” ARkStorm’s on the other hand are basically a worst case scenario megastorm that was developed as a weather model in 2011. They are a “hypothetical but plausible extreme storm & flood scenario” for California.

Scientists took to social media to debunk theories that some believed that the storm coming to Southern California was an ARkStorm.

Some people also made light of the heavy weather and poked fun at ARkStorm hysteria.

Grammys 2024: The big moments people will be talking about https://www.ocregister.com/2024/02/04/grammys-2024-the-big-moments-people-will-be-talking-about/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 05:31:09 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9834957&preview=true&preview_id=9834957 When it came to the 66th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, there were quite a few moments that had people talking.

Taylor Swift won big. She became the first person to win album of the year four times. Earlier in the night after winning pop vocal album, she announced her upcoming new album, “The Tortured Poets Department.

Fans were also quick to bring the receipts and dig up a tweet from 2022 that shared how Swift’s ex, Joe Alwyn, is in a group chat with Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott called “The Tortured Man Club.”

Speaking of Taylor, she and Olivia Rodrigo appeared to share a sweet moment during Rodrigo’s performance of “Vampire.”

Tracy Chapman joined Luke Combs on stage to perform “Fast Car,” and the tears started falling for many fans watching.

Joni Mitchell blew away the audience with her first-ever Grammy performance at 80 years old, which comes after years of rehabilitation following a near-fatal brain aneurysm. She won the Grammy for best folk album with “Joni Mitchell at Newport.”

Tina Turner’s presence was felt throughout the evening. Miley Cyrus performed “Flowers” after winning her first Grammy, which had many seeing inspiration from the late Turner.

Additionally, Fantasia Barrino led a tribute to Turner with a performance of “Proud Mary,” the Creedence Clearwater Revival song written by John Fogerty that Turner transformed into a showstopper of her own. Fans online were also quick to point out that it was the same song Fantasia had auditioned with for the third season of “American Idol” which she won in 2004.

SZA performed her hit song “Kill Bill” which had a talked-about moment from one of her dancers. Later in the night, she won Best R&B Song for “Snooze,” and in her excitement said hi to Taylor Swift.

Jay-Z received the Global Impact Award Grammy and brought his and Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, to join him on the stage. During his acceptance speech, he addressed the fact that Beyoncé has won the most Grammys of anyone, but has never won Album of the Year.

People found out that Meryl Streep’s son-in-law is Grammy winner Mark Ronson when the two presented best record of the year together to Cyrus for “Flowers.”

Billy Joel returned to the Grammys after decades away to perform “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first new song in 17 years. The last time Joel performed at the Grammys was in 2002 when he took the stage with Tony Bennett to perform “New York State of Mind.”

Celine Dion shocked the crowd at Crypto.com Arena and viewers at home when she took the stage to present album of the year to Swift. Dion took some time away from the spotlight at the end of 2022 when she shared she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, a “rare autoimmune neurological disorder.”

Here are the top moments people were talking about during the first hour of the show.

Miley Cyrus won her first Grammy Award for Pop Solo Performance for “Flowers.”

She went on to perform the song during the award show in a Tina Turner-inspired look. She even got the audience up on their feet when she paused from singing to ask them “Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?”

She also took a moment during her performance to share her excitement for winning her first Grammy Award.

Tracy Chapman joining Luke Combs on stage to perform “Fast Car.”

Billie Eilish delivered a powerfance performance with her brother Finneas of “What Was I Made For” from the “Barbie” movie.

Additionally, viewers at home were relieved to see Trevor Noah hosting the award show. Even Swifties approved of the joke he made about Taylor Swift as she entered the award show during his opening monologue.

ALSO SEE: Grammys 2024: Taylor Swift’s record-breaking win, plus Miley Cyrus, Victoria Monét

However, during Sunday’s award show, Swift shocked fans when she announced her new album “The Tortured Poets Department” during her acceptance speech after winning best pop vocal album.

Swifties took to social media to react to thew news that the new album was dropping April 19.

Earlier in the night Swifties were still anticipating the announcement of “reputation (Taylor’s Version)” on social media.

The last time fans thought an announcement for the re-recording of her sixth studio album was near was in November for the final Eras tour performance of 2023 in Brazil.

While it didn’t happen then, Swifties have been right about Swift dropping Easter eggs in the past for album announcements. On August 9 (or 8/9 as in “1989”) Swift announced on her final show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles that 1989 (Taylor’s Version) would be her next re-recording. And just a few months prior on May 5, she announced the re-recording of “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)”

Leading up to tonight’s Grammy Awards ceremony, eagle-eyed fans noticed Swift had changed her social media profile picture to have a black and white filter, a similar color scheme to the original cover art for “reputation.”

Fans also checked on Swift’s site and discovered it appeared to be down. Upon further inspection, many noticed that one of the phrases on the site could be descrambled to spell out “red herring.”

Swifties took to social media to share their excitement as “Rep TV” started trending on X, formerly known as Twitter, hours before the ceremony.

As Swift walked the red carpet, other phrases started to trend on social media about her outfit such as “She’s wearing white” and “Black and White.”

Swift was nominated for six Grammy’s; best pop vocal album, best pop solo performance, song of the year, record of the year, best pop duo/group performance and album of the year. Swift also won album of the year for “Midnights,”making her the first artist in Grammy history to win album of the year four times.

Taylor Swift and other UMG artists’ music is missing from TikTok. Here’s why https://www.ocregister.com/2024/02/01/taylor-swift-and-other-umg-artists-music-is-missing-from-tiktok-heres-why/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 02:00:54 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9827045&preview=true&preview_id=9827045 Universal Music Group has ended its agreement with TikTok and in doing so removed all of its artist’s music from the popular social media app. This means that creators will no longer be able to use music from artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, Harry Styles and Niall Horan.

In an open letter, UMG stated there were three main reasons it let its contract expire on Jan. 31, 2024. “In our contract renewal discussions, we have been pressing them on three critical issues—appropriate compensation for our artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of AI, and online safety for TikTok’s users.”

In response, TikTok shared a statement claiming it was “sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.” TikTok also noted that it had been able to “reach ‘artist-first’ agreements with every other label and publisher.”

So where does that leave the fans, and artists for that matter?

Since its early days, music has played a large role in TikTok’s popularity; the app was first named Musical.ly, after all.

Unlike other apps at the time, TikTok allowed users to easily pull the sound from someone’s video for their own. It’s believed by many users that this feature influenced the algorithm and improved the view count on videos. These sounds could be audio from pop culture moments, shows, songs or original videos. Instagram took note of this and began incorporating its song library with Reels, and YouTube Shorts followed suit soon after.

@noahkahanmusic

thanks love you guys #newmusic #stickseason #noahkahan #noahkahanmusic #forever

Artists have also used TikTok to promote their music. One way is through choreographed dances from creators, such as TikTokkers “brookieandjessie” creating a short routine for Meghan Trainor’s “Made You Look” that helped the song reach 4 million videos on TikTok as of Dec. 22, 2023.

@brookieandjessie

made u look!!

♬ Made You Look – Meghan Trainor

@brookieandjessie

made her look !!!!!!!! @Meghan Trainor we love u

♬ Made You Look (feat. Kim Petras) – Meghan Trainor

Another strategy encouraged users to lipsync to a snippet of the song. Swift encouraged fans to use her “Anti-Hero” lyrics “It’s me, hi. I’m the problem, it’s me” for her #AntiHeroChallenge exclusively on YouTube Shorts, before users brought over to TikTok where the song was used in over 367.4K videos.

Users argue viral trends on TikTok drive mainstream popularity, including Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 single “Driver’s License” from her debut album “Sour.”

Rodrigo was already a well known name among Disney Channel fans for her work on “Bizzardvark” and Disney+’s “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” where she got to show off some of her singing chops. During the pandemic, Rodrigo began posting clips of her working on songs from her piano to her social media accounts.

@livbedumb

hi! my first tik tok! my name is olivia and I write songs a lot! hope u like dis one!

♬ original sound – Olivia Rodrigo

She shared a preview of what would become “Driver’s License” on her Instagram on July 23, 2020, which sparked fan interest in hearing the full song. She shared a new snippet  performing the song on guitar to TikTok on Dec. 27, 2020. When the song was released on Jan. 8, 2021, she again took to TikTok to share the backstory of the song as it played in the background.

@livbedumb

♬ drivers license – Olivia Rodrigo

Shortly there after, users began recording themselves lipsyncing to the song in a similar fashion; emotionally singing the prechorus before falling back on their bed and cutting to them dressed up as the beat dropped.

@spoiledmel

can this be a trend? 😳 #oliviarodrigo #driverslicense #fyp @livbedumb stream drivers license!!!!

Billboard took note of the platform’s influence on listeners and launched the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart on Sept. 14, 2023.

Because of this, creators will likely no longer be able to rely on sounds moving forward. TikTok has already been making changes to the style of videos it prioritizes to users’ feeds, encouraging creators to produce more long-form videos, and recently recommending horizontal videos over vertical videos.

Some creators have used their platform to discuss what losing UMG’s music catalog means for the future of TikTok.

@rachelocool

Like actually this is so sad

♬ My Way – Ferrán Sinatra

Users also shared theories about why UMG decided to remove its music catalog from the platform.

@nicky.reardon

This is my theory for why UMG removed their music from Tiktok, and how it is going to completely change the music industry and creator economy over the next year… #longervideos #videoessay #musicindustry #musicmarketing #universalmusic

♬ original sound – Nicky

As for UMG artists on TikTok, they’ll likely begin to take creative approaches when it comes to promoting their work on the platform, such as acoustic versions of their songs or clips from live performances. However, UMG’s music remains available to use on TikTok competitors Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Emmys 2024: The award show’s most talked-about social media moments https://www.ocregister.com/2024/01/15/emmys-2024-the-award-shows-most-talked-about-social-media-moments/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 07:13:37 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9788788&preview=true&preview_id=9788788 The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards aired Monday night on Fox. The big anniversary broadcast, which had been delayed by last year’s strikes, reunited the casts of various beloved television shows such as “Cheers,” “Ally McBeal” and “Martin” to offer some fun moments before presenting awards. It also featured major wins for “The Bear,” “Succession” and “Beef,” a similar pattern that took place at the Golden Globes last week.

The show was hosted by “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson. He was joined by a choir for his opening monologue as he played piano and while paying tribute to television history.

To the delight of the audience, Christina Applegate took the stage and instantly received a standing ovation. Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021 and last summer she shared she was likely stepping away from acting.

Applegate presented the award for best supporting actress in a comedy to “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri, joking that Edebiri needed to get up here (in slightly saltier language), which viewers couldn’t get enough of.

Edebiri became the third Black woman to win supporting actress in a comedy series at the Emmys, taking home the award for “The Bear.” The other two were Jackée Harry in 1987 and Sheryl Lee Ralph won during the last Emmys in 2022.

One of the major memes this award season has been that Ayo is from Ireland after this clip of her at SXSW went viral last year. Since then, both her and the internet have leaned into the bit during the award season.

Quinta Brunson became the first Black actress to win the Comedy Lead Actress category in more than 40 years for “Abbott Elementary.”

Edebiri and Brunson’s friendship has been a favorite for many this award season so people were very thrilled to see both actresses win their respective categories.

Jennifer Coolidge delivered with her acceptance speech after she won best supporting actress in a drama series for “White Lotus,” though she was told to wrap it up by host Anthony Anderson’s mom.

When Pedro Pascal took the stage to present, he saw his moment to show of his comedic chops. This award season, Pascal has worn a sling as part of his red carpet looks. While clarifying it was his shoulder that was injured, not his arm, he also used the moment to jokingly respond to “Succession” star Kieran Culkin. However, Pascal’s comment was silenced for those watching at home, leaving viewers unclear of what the punchline was.

It was later discovered that Pascal said “A lot of people have been asking about my arm. Kieran Culkin beat [the heck] out of me.”

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8b7au33/

Culkin and Pascal have engaged in a back and forth is award season, most recently Culkin goodnaturedly teased Pascal at the Golden Globes.

“The Bear” continued to sweep the awards. In addition to Edebiri winning best supporting actress, Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Jeremy Allen White won the award for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

John Oliver won Outstanding Scripted Variety Series for “Last Week Tonight” and shared he would not leave the stage until he got “played off by Anthony Anderson’s mom.” So to keep his speech going, he started listing off the players of the Liverpool Football Club.

Niecy Nash-Betts acceptance speech after winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” had many cheering her on from the moment she said, “I want to thank me for believing in me.”

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” won for Outstanding Reality Competition Program.

It was also the first time viewers at home who hadn’t tuned into the red carpet preshow saw Princess Poppy’s Emmy look.

Trevor Noah won an Emmy for “The Daily Show,” becoming the first Black person to win an Emmy for outstanding talk series. As he was giving his acceptance speech, viewers at home noticed former “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. asking for the show to hire a host.

Elton John couldn’t make it to the Emmys, but that didn’t stop everyone from cheering him on as he won his first Emmy, officially giving him EGOT status (a recipient of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award).

Another historic moment took place when Ali Wong won for outstanding actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for her performance in “Beef,” making her the first Asian American woman in a lead role to win the award.

Ke Huy Quan presented with Tom Hiddleston and reminded viewers at home how much they love his energy and selfies.

A few costars shared kisses to celebrate their wins, including Kieran Culkin and Brian Cox from “Succession” as well as Matty Matheson and Ebon Moss-Bachrach from “the Bear.

Before Monday’s televised event, it was announced that this year’s show would feature reunions of quite of few memorable television casts. “Martin,” “Cheers,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Ally McBeal,” and each got their own special moment before the cast joined to present awards together.

There was also a brief reunion between Joel McHale and Ken Jeong who starred together in “Community,” which will soon be fulfilling its “6 seasons and a movie” promise. Additionally, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joined forces again to do a Weekend Update from “Saturday Night Live” on the Emmys stage.

The reunions left some curious about which casts they might see brought back together at future Emmy Award shows.

Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers of the “All in the Family” cast also reunited before the memorial segment to pay tribute to Norman Lear.

For this year’s in memorial segment, Charlie Puth took the stage to perform a mashup of “See You Again” and the “Friends” theme song, “I’ll Be There For You.”

Internet detectives quickly determined that it was none other than Princess Poppy from season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It was a delight for many fans as Princess Poppy announced they were retiring their drag career during DragCon 2023.

Disneyland’s Magic Key passes sell out after one day https://www.ocregister.com/2024/01/11/disneylands-magic-key-passes-sell-out-after-one-day/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 02:18:16 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9780664&preview=true&preview_id=9780664 Disneyland’s Magic Key passes resumed sale on Wed. Jan. 10.

Magic Key passes are Disneyland’s annual pass system that went into place in 2021. Different from their previous system, guests are now required to make a reservation to enter the park regardless of their ticket or pass type. Disneyland implemented the new system as part of their COVID-era protocols to better regulate how many guests were attending the Anaheim theme park.

Prior to 2020, those with annual passes were able to come and go from the parks as they pleased, as long as it wasn’t a blackout day for their pass. Disneyland started experimenting with a reservation-only pass in 2019 with their Flex Pass. The $599 Flex Pass had just as many blackout days as their $1,149 Signature pass, with the main difference being that guests were required to make an advance reservation to visit the theme park.

Those who wanted to purchase the Magic Key passes this week were told to join the queue no earlier than 8:45 a.m. and that they would go on sale no earlier than 9 a.m.

However, things didn’t go as planned. As soon as the clock struck at 8:45 a.m., Disneyland’s website crashed.

Just before 9 a.m. some prospective buyers had some luck and were able to successfully join the queue while also sharing tips with others on how to join.

Once people were able to join the queue, they waited.

Throughout most of the day, Disneyland’s 9:38 a.m. message update for those in the queue remained the same, the Imagine Key’s, Enchant Key’s, Believe Key’s and Inspire Key’s were all still available to purchase.

In addition to the virtual queue, there was also a long wait for those renewing passes in person at the Anaheim theme park.

13 Golden Globes 2024 moments: Taylor Swift, Lily Gladstone, Bill Hader and more https://www.ocregister.com/2024/01/07/13-golden-globes-2024-moments-taylor-swift-lily-gladstone-bill-hader-and-more/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 05:46:31 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9771319&preview=true&preview_id=9771319 The 81st Golden Globes, which aired on CBS, had viewers taking to social media to share their opinions and reactions from the start. But it wasn’t all bad, the “Barbie” Movie had its moment, “The Bear” won big and there were quite a few reunions between former co-stars.

Here are the main takeaways from the evening and a few things you’ll probably want to know about because chances are there will be a major discussion about them in the office tomorrow.

1. Viewers were not fans of the monologue

Comedian Jo Koy hosted the 81st Golden Globes, and his opening monologue did not go over well online.

2. Taylor Swift’s reactions were better received than the jokes

Taylor Swift didn’t seem to be amused by Koy’s joke about her. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL… On the Golden Globes we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” said Koy.

The internet wasn’t a fan of the joke either, but they were a fan of Swift’s reaction.

But just to showcase Swift does have a sense of humor, here she is laughing at comedian Jim Gaffigan’s joke.

3. Oh, and speaking of Taylor Swift…

People loved this moment of her and Bill Hader taking a selfie.

Fans also love any time that Swift and her bestie Selena Gomez are together, so here’s the two Golden Globes nominees.

Similar to NFL fans, Golden Globes viewers just seemed to love every time Swift was on camera.

Swifties were also living for this behind-the-scenes moment that appeared to look like Swift was spilling some major tea.

4. The internet’s boyfriend Charles Melton made us melt

Melton first got the internet’s attention with his role as Reggie Mantle in the CW’s Riverdale. In 2019 he proved he had what it takes to be a leading man in his starring role in “The Sun Is Also a Star.” This year, he showcased his acting chops yet again in “May December” alongside Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.

5. Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet were caught kissing on camera

While this isn’t the couple’s first public appearance, viewers weren’t sure if the two knew the cameras were still rolling during commercial breaks.

6. Come on Barbie, Let’s win a Golden Globe

After a Barbenheimer summer, Barbie was nominated for cinematic and box office achievement. Barbie ended up winning, and Taylor Swift, who was also nominated in the category for her concert film of the Eras Tour, led the standing ovation.

7. Ayo Edebiri’s acceptance speech

In 2023, Edebiri returned for season two of “The Bear” and starred in “Theater Camp” and “Bottoms.” Her acceptance speech after she won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series, won the hearts of viewers at home after she thanked her agents and manager’s assistants.

“The Bear” ended up being a big winner of the evening, Jeremy Allen White won for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy TV Series, and the show won Best Television Series for a Musical or Comedy.

8. Lily Gladstone’s historic win

Gladstone is the first Indigenous woman to win the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture – drama.

9. Jennifer Lawrence threatened to leave

The 2013 Queen of Memes, JLaw, brought a good laugh to viewers at home when the camera panned to her during her nomination category.

While Lawrence didn’t end up winning, it’s safe to say she wasn’t too disappointed because her friend Emma Stone took home the prize.

Somewhat related, people were bummed that they weren’t seated together.

10. Reunions were a theme

Is it the 2010s again? The Golden Globes seemed to reunite multiple memorable pairs.

Not only did the non-royal members of “Suits” cast show up, but Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried, who starred as mother and daughter in “Mamma Mia!” had a brief run-in on the red carpet.

For “Hunger Games” fans, Jennifer Lawrence and Lenny Kravitz took a picture together.

“Suits” co-stars Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Sarah Rafferty and Gina Torres presented Best Television Series Drama, and poked some jokes about the series getting a new fan base after it started streaming on Netflix.

Macht and Adams also had a fun preshow moment that included beatboxing.

11. The return of presenting duo Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig

The pair has been known to charm the crowd when they present together, and this year was no exception. Viewers loved the pair so much, that they couldn’t believe they weren’t the ones hosting.

12. Ramy Youssef and Mark Ruffalo kissed

The two shared a quick peck after “Poor Things” won the award for Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy.

13. People were still talking about the Red Carpet

While the show was airing, viewers were circling back on some of their favorite red carpet moments.
