The Irvine Co. has opened five new neighborhoods in Portola Springs in the last few years. Previously another four neighborhoods opened in the northern Irvine village.

A new elementary school is also set to open this fall in the village.

The Portola Springs park boasts a 14,000-square-foot community center with a multipurpose room, patio area, two classrooms and a Native American Wing with cultural displays.

Outside, children played Saturday on the nature-themed playground while the Irvine Girls Softball Association showed off the two lighted softball fields.

There are also two soccer fields with lights for evening play, a sand volleyball court, three lighted tennis courts, six lighted pickleball courts and a concessions stand.

Classes will start being held at the community center in February, including youth dance and music programs and other after-school and camp activities. There will also be recreation and sports programs offered for all ages.

The center will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays; and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Information: cityofirvine.org
