City officials will celebrate the opening of two new skate parks, and the groundbreaking for a new family resource center, at local parks this week.
Thursday, officials will unveil a skate park that features railings and quarter-pipes along a 4,000-square-foot course at Palm Lane Park in west Anaheim. The course is decorated with two orange slices as an homage to Orange County, according to Aaron Spohn, president of Spohn Ranch Skateparks, the designer.
A $500,000 donation from the Disneyland Resort to Anaheim Community Foundation paid for the skate park, along with a second that will open at Schweitzer Park in the near future.
On Saturday, the city will hold a grand opening for a 10,000-square-foot skate park at Ponderosa Park. Ground breaking for a new family resource center at the park will be celebrated at the same time.
The $640,000 skate park built by Grindline Skatepark features lighting for nighttime skating, a pool-style bowl, rails and other street designs. The skate park is the first phase of the city’s $15 million renovation of the 9-acre Ponderosa Park. Developer fees from the Platinum Triangle project are funding the project.
The second phase will be construction of the family resource center with a gymnasium, dance and exercise rooms, counseling areas and other amenities. The third phase, which is slated for construction next year, will add picnic areas, playgrounds, a splash pad and fitness stations.
