The Walt Disney Company announced plans on Wednesday, Feb. 7 to invest $1.5 billion in Fortnite-maker Epic Games and collaborate on new video games and entertainment universes.

Disney CEO Bob Iger discussed during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Wednesday how he sat down with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney and Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro to brainstorm ways to integrate Disney intellectual property into Fortnite games.

“What if we create a gigantic Disney World à la Fortnite that could live next to Fortnite and be completely interconnected with it?” Iger said on the call with analysts. “A world where people can play games that we create and could create their own games.”

Concept art of the Disney-centric video game interface envisioned for the Fortnite partnership looks like a theme park with multiple Disney castles at a gleaming central hub surrounded by at least eight islands populated with visual nods to familiar Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox brands, films and shows.

The theme park-like islands are filled with references to “Wreck It Ralph,” “Monsters Inc.” and “Lilo & Stitch” that sit alongside video game copies of the Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and Cars Land themed lands at the Disneyland resort. A themed land dedicated to “The Nightmare Before Christmas” sits next to Radiator Springs.

Other islands are dedicated solely to recreations of Peter Pan’s Neverland, the Hallelujah Mountains of Avatar’s Pandora and the icy Star Wars planet of Hoth.

“Our new relationship with Epic Games will create a transformational games and entertainment universe that integrates Disney’s world class storytelling into Epic’s cultural phenomenon Fortnite, enabling consumers to play, watch, create and shop for both digital and physical goods,” Iger said on the call. “This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of video games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion.”

Like Epic Games, Disney uses the Unreal Engine 3D design tool to create content for its portfolio of video games, films and TV shows. Walt Disney Imagineering has also used Unreal Engine to help design more than 15 attractions at Disney theme parks — including Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The shared use of technology will help streamline collaboration between Disney and Epic.

“This will enable us to bring together our incredible collection of stories and experiences from across the company for a broad audience in ways we have only dreamed of before,” D’Amaro said in a statement released by Disney. “Epic Games’ industry-leading technology and Fortnite’s open ecosystem will help us reach consumers where they are so they can engage with Disney in the ways that are most relevant to them.”

Disney’s partnership with the maker of the popular Fortnite video game follows the lead of rival Universal Studios that teamed up with Nintendo to bring Super Mario and Donkey Kong rides to its theme parks in Hollywood and Japan and soon to Florida and Singapore.

Is Taylor Swift going to Disneyland after the Super Bowl? Swifties hope so https://www.ocregister.com/2024/02/07/is-taylor-swift-going-to-disneyland-after-the-super-bowl-swifties-hope-so/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 17:58:35 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9841759&preview=true&preview_id=9841759 The dream scenario that the Kansas City Chiefs faithful, Taylor Swift fans, Disney advertising execs and the social mediasphere all hope comes true on Super Bowl Sunday goes something like this.

A Disney camera crew searches for the Chiefs star of the game through the red and gold confetti raining down on the Super Bowl victory celebration as “When You Wish Upon a Star” plays in the background.

“Travis Kelce,” intones the sports broadcaster narrator. “You and the Kansas City Chiefs just won the Super Bowl. What are you going to do next?”

Pop star Taylor Swift gives Kelce a big victory kiss and the pair turn to the camera.

“We’re going to Disneyland!” Kelce and Swift shout in unison.

Sign up for our Park Life newsletter and find out what’s new and interesting every week at Southern California’s theme parks. Subscribe here.

Could it happen? Anything is possible when you wish upon a star.

A lot of stars would have to align for the “Swelce” celebrity couple to end up on a Super Bowl LVIII victory float along Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland on Monday, Feb. 12.

ALSO SEE: Disneyland kicks off Black History Month with food and music festival

For starters, the Chiefs would have to beat the San Francisco 49ers, who are two-point favorites to win Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, Feb. 11.

Then Disney would have to choose Kelce as the star of the game to feature in the annual Super Bowl television commercial. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went to Disneyland last year after Kansas City’s Super Bowl victory.

ALSO SEE: Patrick Mahomes wants Disney to build more parks for his Super Bowl MVP ‘world tour’

Disney arranges in advance for representatives from each team to serve as the in-the-moment spokesperson — so the player selections for both teams have likely already been made. The possibility of a Kelce-Swift visit to the Happiest Place on Earth would be awfully difficult for the Disney brass to resist.

Then there’s the question of whether Swift could actually make it from a Tokyo tour date to the Super Bowl in Vegas — which is not going to be an easy task.

ALSO SEE: Knott’s Berry Farm kicks off Peanuts Celebration with Camp Snoopy under construction

Fortunately, the Associated Press has mapped out what it would take for Swift to make the 6,000-mile Tokyo-to-Vegas trip and settle into her luxury box seat just in time for kick off.

There are no direct flights from Tokyo to Vegas, so Swift would have to fly aboard her private jet — which AP estimates would take 11 to 12 hours.

Accounting for time zones, AP estimates Swift could just make the 3:30 p.m. Super Bowl kickoff in Vegas if she heads for the airport immediately after her show at the 55,000-capacity Tokyo Dome ends at 9:30 p.m. local time.

After that, it’s just a question of whether Swift wants to endure the madness of a Disneyland appearance with her Super Bowl champion boyfriend. She doesn’t have to be anywhere until Feb. 16, when her record-setting Eras Tour resumes in Australia.

ALSO SEE: Disneyland’s Pixar Place Hotel is like walking into an animator’s studio

Social media has been awash with Swifties talking about the possibility of the pop singer and her squeeze taking over Disneyland on Monday, Feb. 12, according to Theme Park Insider.

“It’s all likely a longshot, but that’s enough of a chance for many Swift fans to consider buying a ticket to the park for even the slight opportunity to see their favorite singer in person,” according to Theme Park Insider. “Magic Key reservations for Feb. 12 already are booked out, but reservations for daily ticket holders on that date remain available.”

ALSO SEE: 5 best things I ate at Disneyland’s Great Maple restaurant

San Francisco 49ers fans are hoping quarterback Brock Purdy or running back Christian McCaffrey are on the Disneyland parade float rather than Kelce and Swift. Both 49ers players are engaged — Purdy to his college girlfriend Jenna Brandt and McCaffrey to actress and 2012 Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo.

The good news for fans of the Super Bowl winning team? Fans of the losing team traditionally cancel their Disneyland Magic Key reservations just after the Super Bowl ends — freeing up more last minute annual pass spots for the winning side.

The choice whether to close completely, close early or stay open during the heavy rains that have pummeled the Southland since Thursday has been a game-time decision each morning for the area’s weather-dependent theme parks.

Disney California Adventure moved up its closing time on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 9 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to the Disneyland app.

Disneyland is set to close early at 8 p.m. on Tuesday to empty the Anaheim theme park of daily visitors so the separate admission Sweethearts’ Nite after-hours event can get started. Disney offers no refunds for Disneyland After Dark events due to inclement weather.

Knott’s Berry Farm and SeaWorld San Diego closed on Tuesday due to the rain, according to the parks’ social media accounts.

Knott’s tickets purchased for Tuesday are valid any day through Feb. 25.

SeaWorld’s Weather-or-Not program provides a free return visit when rain, thunder, lightning, hail, winds, heat, snow or a hurricane force the closure of the park.

Universal Studios Hollywood and Legoland California remained open on Tuesday despite the bad weather.

Universal Studios tickets are rain or shine with no complimentary admission to return another day when it rains.

Legoland California offers a “Rainy Day Promise” that allows visitors to return within a year when storms ruin the day.

Six Flags Magic Mountain is closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the winter season.

The latest rainfall hammering Southern California is thanks to a Pineapple Express weather system carrying heavy rain from the tropical Pacific – specifically from the Hawaiian islands area.

The Great Maple restaurant serves as the flagship eatery in the newly renovated Pixar-themed hotel that debuted on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

As part of the hotel’s gradual transformation, Great Maple opened in November with a menu that includes hamburgers, fried chicken, ribs, fish, steak, seafood, pasta and salads.

During a media preview, I tasted about a dozen items from the Great Maple menu. Here are five of my favorites:

1) Fried Chicken & Doughnuts

It’s pretty hard to resist the buttermilk fried chicken and maple bacon doughnuts topped with a healthy dose of maple syrup. It’s always a good sign when a restaurant’s signature dish lives up to its reputation.

2) Portobello Mushroom Fries

Billed as “Everyone’s Favorite Starter,” the parmesan-crusted portobello mushroom spears are topped with red pepper flakes and basil pesto aioli. This was the biggest surprise on the menu — and an open secret for Great Maple regulars.

The fall-off-the-bone slow-braised and grilled half rack of ribs comes with hot honey slaw and a white cheddar biscuit. It was hard to stop eating these sweet, sticky and finger-licking good ribs.

4) Steakhouse Burger

The thick and juicy burger is served with aged white cheddar, arugula, tomato, pickled red onions and aioli with a side of French fries, parmesan truffle fries, champagne maple vinaigrette salad or mini Caesar. Everyone does a gastropub burger — but this one stands out from the pack.

5) Mac & Cheese

Mac & Cheese is one of my five basic food groups — so I have a high bar when it comes to this American comfort food staple. Great Maple’s corkscrew pasta with aged white cheddar, American cheese and herb panko gratin comes with an option to add maple chili bacon. When has bacon not made anything better?

Southern California-based Great Maple has other locations in Fashion Island, Pasadena Paseo and San Diego.

Bing Bong is the imaginary friend of 11-year-old protagonist Riley Andersen, who is guided by the emotions Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness in the control center of her mind in Pixar’s “Inside Out” film.

With the head of a pink elephant, fuzzy tail of a purple cat and a body of cotton candy, Bing Bong looks unlike any other character in animated film history, clad in a brown plaid jacket, mini bowler hat, fingerless gloves, polka dot bow tie and a rainbow flower on his lapel.

Bing Bong was voiced by actor Richard Kind who has also voiced characters in “A Bug’s Life,” “American Dad,” “Family Guy” and “Big Mouth.” The “Inside Out 2” sequel hits theaters on June 14.

The Bing Bong meet-and-greet character at Pixar Place Hotel is massive with a prodigious belly of pink cotton candy and a towering height of more than 7 feet. He poses for photos in front of his Rocket Wagon with broom boosters and cardboard wings carrying a swooping inflatable rainbow arch.

For now, Bing Bong can only be seen during select times at the Pixar Shorts Court play area near the Pixar Place Hotel rooftop pool. Anybody can come and visit with Bing Bong — not just hotel guests or theme park visitors.

Other “Inside Out” characters like Joy and Sadness often appear for meet-and-greet photos near the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind ride in Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure.

Posing for group photos at the neon rainbow display in Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff candy shop with one of Disney’s more flamboyant characters has become an annual tradition during the unofficial Gay Days Anaheim mix-in event.

Bing Bong isn’t the only Pixar character making appearances at the new Pixar Place Hotel.

Joe Gardner — the central character in Pixar’s “Soul” — plays jazz songs from the animated movie on a baby grand piano under a staircase just off the main hotel lobby.

From the outside, the hotel exterior suggests a vast white canvas trimmed with black pinstripes and accented with red, blue and yellow pops of color.

The front lobby of the hotel is intended to feel like a gallery of curated artwork and custom creations inspired by Pixar’s famed studio in Northern California. The rear lobby takes visitors through the animated filmmaking process from hand-drawn sketches to wire-frame character designs.

Red, yellow and blue bursts of primary colors serve as bold accents at the front desk in contrast to the muted colors of modern hotel designs.

The Luxo Jr. lamp balancing atop the red-starred blue and yellow Luxo ball serves as the centerpiece of the hotel beneath an atrium mobile featuring colorful stick figure characters from “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters Inc.,” “Wall-E,” “The Incredibles,” “Toy Story,” “Soul” and “Coco.”

“We really wanted to create a new wonderful location at the Disneyland Resort that celebrated the incredible creativity and imagination that goes into our Pixar films and really embrace all the joy, whimsy, optimism and wonder that lives within those stories and all the amazing characters that live in those worlds,” Walt Disney Imagineering’s Kirstin Makela said during the opening ceremony of the hotel.

The cleverest Easter Eggs are hidden in plain sight throughout the hotel — 16 stainless steel silhouettes of familiar Pixar characters set into the floor for treasure hunters determined to find them all. Here’s a hint: Don’t forget to check the elevators.

Upstairs in the 15-story hotel, the hallways are lined with Luxo Ball lights and hand-drawn sketches in the carpeting that suggest Pixar characters like Nemo, Buzz, Edna and Sulley.

Inside the rooms, the highlight is a headboard that moves from warm to cool colors with sketches of “A-ha moments” from Pixar films like “Inside Out,” “Coco,” “Soul” and “Ratatouille.”

Subtle and obvious nods to the Pixar ball and lamp icons show up in the bedspreads, pillows and carpets in each of the rooms.

The Creators Club will serve as an exclusive lounge for guests once construction is complete on the club level rooms. The lounge is filled with ride models of Alien Swirling Saucers at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, the blue snake carousel “horse” from Jessie’s Critter Carousel at Disney California Adventure and attraction posters for Monsters Inc. Ride & Go Seek at Tokyo Disneyland.

Rooms with a theme park view are perfect for watching the “World of Color” water show at Disney California Adventure while the outdoor pool deck provides the ideal spot to catch Disneyland fireworks from an unusual new perspective.

The custom-tiled rooftop pool is surrounded by cabanas, daybeds and pods with a mini water park nearby featuring a water slide and splash pad play area. Seaweed light stanchions with water bubble lights help establish the kelp forest motif and the “Finding Nemo” theme.

The Small Bytes grab-and-go food stand next to the pool opens in March with a small selection of burgers, salads, wraps, nachos and snacks on the menu, along with margaritas and mimosas.

The Pixar Shorts Court on the swimming pool level is filled with games themed to “Bao” (cornhole), “La Luna” (shuffle board) and “Geri’s Game” (chess boards).

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Disney hotel without a little live entertainment.

Bing Bong makes his first ever character appearance at any Disney theme park resort in the world — hanging out for photos near the rooftop pool.

Joe Gardner — the central character in Pixar’s “Soul” — plays jazz songs from the animated movie on a piano under a staircase just off the main hotel lobby.

The rest of the lobby is filled out with the Great Maple restaurant, the Sketch Pad Cafe grab-and-go coffeehouse and Stor-E gift shop — a play on the “Wall-E” Pixar film.

What to expect when Pixar Place Hotel opens at Disneyland https://www.ocregister.com/2024/01/29/what-to-expect-when-pixar-place-hotel-opens-at-disneyland/ Mon, 29 Jan 2024 21:46:34 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9817496&preview=true&preview_id=9817496 The pixie dust is about to settle on the new Pixar Place Hotel after a two-year makeover of the Paradise Pier Hotel that will bring a fresh splash of Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Coco, Wall-E, the Incredibles and other Pixar characters to the 40-year-old hotel.

The refreshed Pixar Place Hotel officially reopens on Tuesday, Jan. 30 with three new eateries, a gift shop and a rooftop mini water park.

The 15-story Paradise Pier Hotel has remained open during the transformation into the first Pixar-themed hotel in the United States.

From the front desk to the lobby to the guest rooms, never-before-seen Pixar artwork will showcase the artistic process from early sketches to maquette models to finished designs.

A new Great Maple restaurant opened in November on the ground floor of the hotel with a menu that includes the restaurant’s signature maple bacon doughnuts along with fried chicken, ribs, fish and breakfast items.

The new Sketch Pad Cafe in the hotel lobby offers coffee, tea, baked goods and other grab-and-go items.

The new Small Bytes Pool Bar next to the rooftop pool serves salads, wraps and cheese plates along with signature drinks.

Both the Sketch Pad Cafe and Small Bytes Pool Bar are also run by Great Maple.

The new Stor-E gift shop – a play on the “Wall-E” Pixar film – sells Disneyland apparel, toys, souvenirs and sundries.

While much of the Paradise Pier Hotel lobby has already gotten a Pixar makeover, the iconic centerpiece has yet to be unveiled with a character mobile hanging above the Luxo Jr. lamp balancing atop the red-starred blue and yellow Luxo ball.

The mobile suspended from the lobby’s skylight atrium is expected to feature characters from “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters Inc.,” “Wall-E,” “The Incredibles,” “Inside Out,” “Toy Story,” “Soul” and “Coco.”

The Pixar storytelling will extend to the hotel rooms with Luxo Ball pillows, Luxo Jr. Lamp lighting fixtures and illustrations created by Pixar artists just for the hotel. Expansive headboards arranged from warm to cool colors feature concept art from “The Incredibles,” “Brave,” “Toy Story” and other Pixar films.

The hotel’s Pixar-inspired Pixel Pool has been open since August with the Nemo’s Cove splash pad and the 186-foot-long Crush’s Surfin’ Slide.

Outdoor fire pits themed to hotheaded Pixar characters like Jack-Jack from “The Incredibles” and Anger from “Inside Out” line the rooftop swimming pool area. After dark, the pool deck also serves as the ideal viewing spot for Disneyland fireworks.

When it’s time to work up a sweat, the hotel’s fitness center boasts an inspirational mural of Mike and Sulley from “Monsters University” running on a treadmill.

Possibly the best perk of the new Pixar Place Hotel? A dedicated entrance across the street with direct access to Disney California Adventure just for hotel guests.

The hotel has been through a few facelifts over the years. The 1984 Pan Pacific Hotel was acquired by Disney in 1995 and rechristened the Disneyland Pacific Hotel before being transformed into the Paradise Pier Hotel in 2000 as part of the debut of Disney California Adventure.

Tortilla Jo’s will close on March 31 at the outdoor shopping mall next to Disneyland while the restaurant’s grab-and-go taqueria will remain open until April 13.

The Patina Restaurant Group’s Mexican-style cantina is closing to make way for a trio of new restaurant concepts featuring Mexican cuisine by Michelin-starred chef Carlos Gaytán.

Downtown Disney’s culinary scene is undergoing a major overhaul with 11 new restaurant and bar concepts set to open this year.

Gaytán’s Paseo restaurant, Centrico courtyard bar and Tiendita grab-and-go stand are set to open this spring in the space formerly occupied by the Patina group’s Catal restaurant and Uva bar.

The Parkside Market food hall-concept by the Levy Group will feature Seoul Sister (Korean rice bowls), Sip & Sonder (Caribbean-inspired coffee house), GG’s Chicken Shop (Rotisserie and fried chicken sandwiches) and a rooftop bar.

Patina hasn’t said if it plans to hang onto the Tortilla Jo’s location and Disneyland hasn’t announced what type of restaurant might fill the space. Patina operates the Naples restaurant and Napolini Pizzeria at Downtown Disney.

At Walt Disney World, Patina operates The Edison (Classic American fare in an industrial gothic setting), Morimoto Asia (Pan-Asian flavors served from an exhibition kitchen) and Enzo’s Hideaway (Prohibition era speakeasy).

Levy also has a long-standing presence at Disney Springs with the Paddlefish seafood eatery. Both Patina and Levy have Italian concepts at Disney World’s outdoor mall that would be redundant at Downtown Disney.

What else could replace Tortilla Jo’s?

Disneyland officials have said they want to bring more Disney Springs-style food and beverage retailers to the Anaheim theme park resort.

The DisneylandForward proposal teased Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar as the kind of Indiana Jones-themed bar that Anaheim is missing out on under current city development guidelines.

Other popular Disney Springs food and beverage options that could work in the Tortilla Jo’s space at Downtown Disney include Gideon’s Bakery, Ragland Road Irish Pub and the new Summer House on the Lake.
